When considering the adoption of a springer using a rescue organization, we encourage you to do some research. Sadly, there are people calling themselves "rescue" who are actually brokering dogs and filling orders.
Questions you might ask a rescue:
Are you registered? provincially or federally?
Registered charities are required to provide yearly financial statements which are available to the public.
Are your volunteers experienced in the breed?
Fanciers, trainers and reputable breeders should be part of the membership.
Can you supply original veterinary receipts for an individual dog?
You want a clear picture of any noted health concerns.
Where did the rescue get the foster dog? shelter? owner? another country?
While you will not be given the last owner's contact information, you want to make sure that you are not getting a stolen dog... or through a broker posing as a charitable rescue.
What is your adoption fee? is it solid or sliding? if sliding, why?
Some rescue dogs incur large veterinary expenses and rescues need to slide their fee. But since you've already seen the original veterinary invoices, you will understand.
May I breed this dog?
Most reputable rescues alter their dogs prior to placement and will not place a dog to used for breeding.
Reputable rescue volunteers work VERY hard for their foster dogs. We receive a lot of joy with our work and also a lot of heartbreak. We want you to find the right springer for your family... whether you adopt with ESRAC or someone else, we will be happy to share information about health, training and grooming in the springer world.
Our adoption fee is $250. Please do not ask us to discount our dogs.
